Republic of Ireland rugby honered in 2015 RTE sports awards

The Republic of Ireland national rugby side fared well as the nominations for the 2015 RTÉ Sports Person of the Year Award, Team of the Year Award, and the Manager of the Year Award were announced yesterday.

With a look back on the dramatic and memorable Ireland sporting highlights of 2015, the winners will be announced and presented with their awards at The 2015 RTÉ Sports Awards ceremony in association with Sport Ireland live on RTÉ One, Saturday 19 December at 9.40 pm.

The 2015 awards ceremony will also see the RTÉ-Sport Ireland Hall of Fame Award presented to a famous Irish sporting legend.

Presented by Darragh Maloney, the live show will review a spectacular year for Irish rugby union players, athletes and teams.

Ireland lock Paul O'Connell was nominated for the RTE Sport Sports Person of the Year Award after leading Ireland to back-to-back RBS 6 Nations titles in two years – 2014 and 2015. O’Connell was named Player of the Tournament after winning the Rugby Six Nations trophy in 2015.

Ireland enjoyed successive RBS 6 Nations titles, having already claimed the crown a year ago in Paris, with O'Connell leading the team on both occasions.

Ireland giant, O'Connell retired from international duty after Rugby World Cup 2015.

The Republic of Ireland National Team side has been nominated for the Team of the Year Award after their back to back RBS 6 Nations successes. And Ireland coach Joe Schmidt featured among the 12 nominees for the 2015 Manager of the Year Award.

There are 14 nominees in total for Ireland Sports Person of the Year: Leighton Aspell, jockey; Rena Buckley, football; Michael Conlan, boxing; Andy Lee, boxing; Shane Lowry, golf; Jack McCaffery, football; Rory McIlroy, golf; Michael McKillop, Paul O’Connell, rugby; TJ Reid, hurling; Sophie Spence, rugby; Richie Towell; Jon Walters, footbsall.

The prestigious highly-coveted RTÉ Sport Team of the Year Award is open to vote by the general public who can still vote for their favorite Irish team of 2015.

The RTÉ Sport Team of the Year shortlist features: Dublin Football, Kilkenny Hurling, Cork Camogie, Cork Ladies Football Team, Dundalk, Ireland Men’s Rugby Team – current 6 Nations Champions, Ireland Women’s Rugby Team – current 6 Nations champions, Ireland Men’s Hockey Team, Ireland Boxing Team, Northern Ireland Soccer Team, Republic of Ireland Soccer Team, Team Ireland, and Ireland Women's Cricket Team.

The 2015 RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year award nominees are: Brian Cody, Craig Fulton, and Jim Gavin. Stephen Kenny, Willie Mullins, Paudie Murray, Martin O’Neill who took the Republic of Ireland to Euro 2016 qualification after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-offs and qualified for their first ever European Championship finals, Eamonn Ryan, Joe Schmidt managed the Republic of Ireland national rugby team to back-to-back 6 Nations championships, Tom Tierney whose Ireland Women’s rugby team won their second 6 Nations title in three 3 years, and Billy Walsh.
