RBS 6 Nations News: France and England win, Ireland and Wales draw in opening clashes

The Rugby Six Nations 2016 Championship has commenced with an intense opening weekend of great rugby battles. France, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, and Italy are fighting head-to-head as they go into Round 2 of the RBS Six Nations Championship this weekend.

Eddie Jones started his life in charge of England with a 15 - 9 victory against Scotland; France fought hard for a 23 - 21 win against Italy, and Wales came fighting back from being 13 - 0 down to a 16 - 16 draw with last year's champions, Ireland.

Here are the results to date from Round One with only a total of 8 points separating the six national rugby teams over the first three games:

RBS 6 NATIONS ROUND 1 RESULTS

FRANCE 23 – 21 ITALY

The Italians traveled to Paris and competed against France with real rugby intellect. On his RBS 6 Nations debut, Italy’s Canna opened the scoring of the 2016 RBS 6 Nations with a finely-struck drop goal. A rattled France was trailing 18-10 with just over a quarter to go when they upped their tempo and sent Hugo Bonneval over.

Jules Plisson nailed a huge kick from halfway to give France the lead at the end. Plisson showed his mental strength with eight points including his crucial winning penalty to earn the win for Les Bleus. In Sergio Parisse, Italy has a real leader, and a player who intends to win games by fighting to the end.

After a strong start, Italy fell short of a historic first ever Rigby Six Nations victory in Paris after Sergio Parisse's last-gasp drop goal was dragged wide and Italy went down 23-21 to France. Reportedly a rule of the game of rugby is 'never pass to a player in a worse position,' but France denied the rule against Italy.

A tired looking France side earned a narrow victory over Italy resulting in a significant wake-up call for the French, who will have to be much better in their upcoming Round 2 clash with Ireland, a brilliantly coached team under boss Joe Schmidt.

SCOTLAND 9 – 15 ENGLAND

England got ahead at Murrayfield and stayed there against Scotland, protecting their lead with brilliant defending. After a humiliating show in Rugby World Cup 2015, the Red Rose's veteran squad came back to deliver an opening 15 - 9 RBS 6 Nations triumph to their fans and nation.

Newly hired England boss Eddie Jones earned a strong victory over Scotland after only a couple of weeks with the players on his new side, although it is far too early in the tournament to determine if England have a strong chance to emerge with the RBS 6 Nations trophy in 2016.

Jones' decision not to add new talent to the England line-up paid dividends as Greig Laidlaw's two penalties in the first period kept the hosts within a point after George Kruis' try. Scotland came up against a very structured English defense that they could not unlock.

England has yet to concede a try on Scottish soil since 2004. However Scotland’s run of seven consecutive home defeats equals their worst ever home run in the Six Nations Championship. Scotland boss Vern Cotter said after the game that his side could have won the game but for a few mistakes.

Although Scotland has a top coach in Cotter, once again they seem to lack the personnel and firepower to come out on top in their 2016 Six Nations campaign.

IRELAND 16 – 16 WALES

A disciplined Ireland side played beautiful, winning rugby against Wales but ended up with a draw in the most mouth-watering match of the opening weekend

Wales delivered a tremendous performance against Ireland, scoring 16 unanswered points to come back from being 13 - 0 down, and nearly won the game showcasing the confidence and quality of Warren Gatland's Welsh side.

Wales appear to have learned their lessons from the 2015 World Cup and their style was noticeably more expansive against Ireland than they have been in the past. The Welsh were less predictable in attack, while keeping the ferocious defense that has been their hallmark.

However the result was frustrating for Ireland who missed a clear opportunity to win the match after having taken a 13-0 lead. Neither side could keep up the fierce pace throughout the match that they started with at the start of the opening game of the tournament.

Ireland can take consolation that they emerged unbeaten from a high quality game on the opening weekend. Notably 29-year-old Jamie Roberts was impressive after playing student rugby for Cambridge and studying in the first half of the season.

RBS 6 NATIONS ROUND 2 FIXTURES

Coming up in Round 2, on February 13th France host Ireland at Stade de France in Paris and Scotland travel to Wales to battle at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. England travel to Italy to compete at Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Valentine’s Day – Sunday, February 14th.
