England 2nd in World Rugby Union

Unbeaten England prepares for Autumn Internationals

In three months the Rugby Union Four Nations kicks off in the UK, and the England Rugby Union team need to keep improving if they hope to replace New Zealand as the Rugby Union’s dominant team despite their recent whitewash success in Australia. England are now second in the Rugby Union global rankings following their 3-0 wipeout of Australia down under, having moved up from eighth place when new England manager Eddie Jones took over in December. England are on a winning run of 10 Tests, only four behind the record set under Sir Clive Woodward.

Captain Owen Farrell said that toppling New Zealand remains England’s main objective, and that England must continue to improve if they are to challenge world champions New Zealand. "What we've done is a step in the right direction, but we have to back it up and keep improving because we're not where we want to be," said Farrell. "It's been brilliant. We'll enjoy this because it has never been done before. We're in a good place but our goal is clearly to be the best, that's what's been said since we met up. That's what we're working towards.”

"There might be times we put little bits together, but there aren't big patches of that yet so it's about how we do that,” added Farrell. "We'll definitely go back and look at the series as a whole and make sure we learn from it. We're not where we want to be yet although we've come here and got a brilliant three results. The only thing we can do is to get better." Saracens and England superstar Owen Farrell scored 24 points in England’s 44-40 third-Test victory over the Wallabies on Saturday in Sydney through six penalties and three conversions. Farrell only missed one of his 10 shots at goal, finishing the series with a 66-point haul and 88 per cent strike rate.

Farrell remarked that his recent coaching sessions with Jonny Wilkinson at England’s Surrey training base have improved his skills to a new level. "Working with Jonny has impacted on me massively. He's made me understand a lot better what I do and how I get to where I want to get to. He's the best ever," Farrell said. “I can’t see anybody ever being better than him either. He’s someone who's thought a lot about it. Not only that, but he's a brilliant person to learn off. If it doesn't go in one way he's got 10 different ways of telling you how to do it. It's brilliant for the likes of George Ford and myself."

The rugby world are watching for more success ahead for England after their amazing climb up in world rankings to second in the world after New Zealand following their first series win in Australia. England have won nine matches in a row, and are still celebrating their success as Head Coach Eddie Jones caught the happy mood of an excited base of UK supporters upon completion their historic 3-0 whitewash against the Wallabies only a few months after sealing their first Grand Slam in 13 years.Jones talked about what is next for his side.

"I'm sure that everyone at home who watched the three Tests can't wait to see us play in November," the Australian said. "They must be lining up at Twickenham now trying to get seats." In reply to questions about what he plans to work on and change, Jones said England needs to be more relentless and were too inconsistent against the Wallabies. Jones also mentioned lax defensive displays in the first and third Test matches. "We've got a lot of hard work ahead of us," Jones said after England’s 44-40 victory in Sydney, Australia. "We have serious deficiencies in our consistency, but that will come with time and with more detailed practice. "The All Blacks beat Wales by a big score, which just shows their incredible relentlessness. We don't have that yet but that's where we are aiming to go," continued Jones.

Also to be noted is that Australia were slowed donw in the series by injury and unavailability. "We are not the finished article by any means," said scrum-half Ben Youngs. "We have got to kick on from where we are." Before the 2016 Six Nations tournament, Jones had said that England lacked "world-class players" After England won the Grand Slam, Jones praised Owen Farrell, George Ford, James Haskell, Chris Robshaw, Maro Itoje, and Dan Cole.

Owen Farrell finished the series with an astonishing 66 points and an 88 per cent conversion rate, nailing 23 out of his 26 kicks at goal in the process. "Billy Vunipola was absolutely outstanding, while his brother Mako really came through on this tour," Jones said after England won. "I thought Owen and George really grew as guys who could control a game, they knew when to run, knew when to kick, and knew when to pass. So they are the guys that really stood out."

It is agreed that there must be a place for Farrell in the starting XV for the Autumn Internationals. The Saracen may be chasing down Wilkinson's England points record in the future. After their success down under, it will now be hard to break up the Ford and Farrell combination at 10 and 12, with both players excelling down under and the dynamic duo could become "legends of the game". Jones has options in the midfield: Manu Tuilagi will be drafted back into the squad, along with youngster Harry Mallinder.

Ben Te'o didn't feature in the tour down under in Australia, and will be playing in the Premiership next season with Worcester. Jones masterminded Japan's surprising win against South Africa in last year's World Cup before joining England Jones is looking to improve his managerial skills along with his side. He plans to spend time with the Orica GreenEDGE team at July’s Tour de France. "I'm keen to have a look at what they do because I've got to get better," he said. "If the team's not consistent, then our coaching's not good enough. You can never take your foot off the pedal."
