Eddie Jones appointed Northampton hooker Dylan Hartley as England captain before the Australia tour and was greeted with universal negativity due to his unfavorable disciplinary record. However Hartley has proved his critics wrong and instead displayed an impressive performance and was an inspirational choice, bringing his side to victory in a whitewash down-under. Reportedly Hartley leadership led to “meticulous attention to detail, clear communication, outstanding set-piece work and tactical intelligence”.

In the upcoming season, England are targeting the world No 1 spot. England boss Jones's approach to the game of rugby is inspiring and transforming to his players in less than six months since his first game in charge, Jones has brought about an astonishing transformation which has taken England from eighth place in the global rankings to second. Jones’ side is grateful to be on the rise after their early, embarrassing exit from last season’s World Cup tournament. England now has plans to win the 2019 World Cup in Japan after enjoying nine wins from nine games in a Six Nations Grand Slam, followed by a whitewash of Australia this summer.

England No. 8 Billy Vunipola believes he can improve his game by 50 per cent after being a key player in England’s Six Nations Grand Slam and historic 3-0 series whitewash of Australia on their recent summer tour, warning “I’m only half the player I could be.”Twenty-three-year-old Vunipola won the Premiership and Champions Cup with Saracens. Vunipola seeks fame and greatness aiming to topple the All Blacks with England aiming to turn recent victories into world domination. Billy enjoyed the best season of his career so far, winning 10 out of 12 international Tests, which included three man-of-the-match awards and a Six Nations Grand Slam. Billy’s new boss Eddie Jones has put out a challenge to Vunipola to become the finest number eight in the world.

'I can add another 50 definitely. There's a lot left. I feel like I can get way better than I am at the moment,” responded Vunipola to Jones. 'I want to be the best. I was too scared to say it because I'm not anywhere near that level yet but Eddie laid down the challenge and its there on paper now. I don't want to be an average rugby player. I don't want to be just a good Premiership player, who was OK at international level. I want to be very, very good at both.”

Vunipola has set goals to continue to work towards a physical transformation, which has seen the 126kg forward curb his love of junk food and adopt a healthier diet. “It's about having that awareness of my own fitness, I've matured in that way,” said Vunipola. “It's not a matter of never eating badly; you have to feed your soul as well as your body. If you're always on a diet you end up being miserable.” England are buoyed up in confidence by their whitewash of Australia Down Under taking them to No. 2 in the world, while enjoying 10 matches undefeated this year. England’s goal is to enjoy victories against South Africa, Argentina, Fiji and Australia in the Autumn Internationals that would give them a record-equaling 14 wins in a row. New Zealand are the targeted current No. 1 world rugby team champions.

“It's more important for us to catch the All Blacks,” said Vunipola. “It's important we don't start chasing wins. Once you start thinking about 14 wins you start losing focus of the things that got you there. You put a lot of pressure, unnecessary pressure, on yourselves to perform. 'It's inevitable we're going to have a dip at some point, that's human nature, but it's important then that we stay close as a group and don't get drawn into over-reactions. The All Blacks have lost games but they never over-react. They stay true to themselves and they've stayed at that level for such a long period. It's not one or two years but eight, nine, 10 years. That's what we're pushing towards. It's a big challenge but one we're excited to face.”

“With Eddie there's always a bigger and better challenge,' Vunipola continued. “That's the best thing about him. He pushes us to be better, he believes we can be better even when we didn't believe it. After the last match he said, 'congratulations, have fun tonight', but he was also clear, he said, 'this isn't the end, know there's a bigger goal to go after'. “That's what he's about and we are too. We don't want to be just contenders; we want to be number one in the world. That's the goal now.”

Jones is especially targeting improvement in England’s defense.

Dylan Hartley is likely to continue as England captain when Eddie Jones' side go for a clean sweep in the Autumn Internationals. England play South Africa, Fiji, Argentina, and Australia in coming months. Jones says if Hartley has the same level of commitment he displayed in Australia when he comes back from vacation, he will retain his role as skipper. “I'll sit down with Dylan when he gets back and have a chat with him but, all things being equal and if he's got the same level of commitment that he's had, then I would anticipate him continuing during November.”

England face southern challengers South Africa, Fiji, Argentina and Australia at Twickenham Stadium in November and early December. If they win all their Autumn Internationals matches, England will complete the year with a 100 per cent record and stay on course to match or surpass the world record of 17 consecutive Test victories. Jones was delighted with his side’s discipline, mental toughness and decision-making in Australia, as he targets significant improvements in defense and England's set-piece work.

'We didn't defend well,' said Jones. 'When I look back and watch the games, we didn't defend well, we've got a lot of work to do in that area as they scored far too many easy tries against us. We want to be an aggressive side, we want to get off the line and we want to hit people but we've also got to be smart about it and we weren't smart. We gave them far too many easy breaks. We've got to be more efficient in our set piece - we have good periods and we have not so good periods. The No 1 team in the world is good all the time. In two of the three Tests, we were fantastic in the lineout, but in one Test we were terrible and that's not good enough. We've got to be much more robust in that area. So it's a big task for our assistant coaches to work on those areas and get them right.”

Jones plans two short camps before his side reunite ahead of the autumn campaign. “We have a camp in August which is just a provisional squad, then we'll name the official squad in the first week of October, a 45-man squad,” said Jones. After last year’s Rugby World Cup debacle, England manager Eddie Jones guided his side to their first Six Nations Grand Slam since 2003. England then whitewashed Australia 3-0 in summer series Down Under. Jones has been taking tips from the Tour de France as he bids to mastermind England's ascent to the summit of world rugby through victories in both the Autumn Internationals and Rugby Six Nations.
