Fiji 43-7 Great Britain

The Great Britain men’s rugby sevens team traveled to Rio to participate in the Rio Olympics 2016 and made it all the way through to win a silver medal in the final battle for gold against Fiji. Fiji's mens’ rugby sevens side won gold in their final match with Great Britain to earn a first ever Olympic medal as the tiny island nation bagged a coveted gold medal. Surely their stunning victory and excellent squad will be remembered in Fiji throughout history!

On Thursday, Welshmen James Davies and Sam Cross fought on the Rio road to a Olympic gold medal with Team GB Sevens following an astonishing sudden death quarter-final victory against Argentina. The match was scoreless for 14 minutes of normal play, until Dan Bibby earned a stunning extra time try to send the Great Britain side into the semi-final against South Africa on Thursday evening at 7pm. Great Britain won that semi-final to face Fiji at 11pm in the final on Friday.

In the first half of the Rugby Sevens Final, Fiji dominated from the opening minute as Captain Osea Kolinisau found space on the left and made it 5-0. The Fijians demonstrated a unique, awe-inspiring style of rugby throughout the game. Jerry Tuwai added a second try only three minutes later. Jasa Veremalua added a third with three minutes remaining in the first half, making the score 17-0. Leone Nakarawa added another to make the score 22-0. Vatemo Ravouvou was the next to score a try to add further gloss to the stunning Fijian performance as one of the world's smallest nations moved toward an unprecedented victory and went on to become Olympic gold medal champions.

GB came out strong in the 2nd half but broke under the superior strength of Fiji. Veremalua notched his brace in the second period and the lead was extended to 36-0 as Fiji’s footballers shed tears of joy knowing they would soon win the match. Team GB finally managed to get on the scoreboard through Brit Dan Norton to make it 36-7. Norton, who scored in Great Britain’s semi-final win against South Africa, restored some hope and pride with his try that was converted successfully by Marcus Watson.

Fiji scored another try with only 30 seconds remaining in the game and made the conversion with a final score of 43-7. Fiji outplayed GB winning 43-7 while displaying impressive skill and power in the final match. However Great Britain can be extremely proud of their outstanding achievement.

Fiji Rugby Glory

A Fijian government official said that their gold medal will generate 500 million Fiji dollars (about £161 million) in tourism and investment. Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama talked about the history making win. “It’s history in the making. We are all proud to be Fijians right now,” said Bainimarama. “We hope the brand of rugby we played today justified the inclusion of rugby in the Olympics and it also propped up tiny nation like us. We don’t have the money and the bucks that Britain has but we managed to beat them.”

The amazing Fiji Rugby Sevens side consisted of hotel porters, policemen, and prison wardens who have become national heroes after winning the bronze medal. Ben Ryan, coach of the Fiji team, confirmed that he will be leaving the team. British Fiji rugby sevens head coach Ryan celebrated with his side after winning the Men’s Rugby Sevens Gold medal final match between Fiji and team Great Britain. The ex-PE teacher from Wimbledon was in awe after winning the battle and a gold medal. Ryan has enjoyed his three years with the Pacific Islanders.

“I’ve had an 80-year-old walk eight hours to training to shake my hand,” said Ryan. “I was lost for words when he told me that. He was telling the truth as well, I saw his shoes!” ‘Iron Lion Ben Ryan’, a popular man in Fiji, was asked to judge the Miss Fiji contest after leading his side to win Fiji’s first ever Olympic medal as Fiji thumped Team GB 43-7 in Thursday’s final. “The boys are front page and back page of the newspapers,” added Ryan. “You come out of the airport and there is a 20-foot billboard of them. They are superstars in Fiji.”

Sevens rugby is almost the Fiji national religion on a cluster of 300 islands in the Pacific Ocean. Fifi’s unorthodox style of play comes in part from their improvised training on beaches using sand-filled plastic bottles as rugby balls thereby increasing their imagination and dexterity. Ryan was appointed in 2013 after an abrupt end to his term as England rugby coach. Ryan led Fiji in back-to-back Sevens World Series titles by harnessing their natural atheletic flair on the pitch in unique plays. Off-the-field discipline includes no mobile phones during tournaments, breath-alyser tests, and monitoring what his men eat for dinner. Ryan’s unpopular grueling fitness sessions paid off in gold.

Great Britain Team

The GB team was only thrown together 10 weeks ago in Moscow at the end of May. Other teams on the sevens circuit had been preparing two years or longer for the time when rugby returned to the Olympic games after a 92-year haitus, Team GB coach Amor only got his players together for the first time on May 30. England, Wales and Scotland all compete as separate nations in the Rugby World Sevens Tournament. In a short time, Amor had to train a group of disparate players into shape physically and tactically that paid off in their fierce tackling and tough defence as GB reached the final by defeating South Africa 7-5.

“We were up against it in a lot of ways with a lot challenges,” said Tom Mitchell, Team GB captain. “We knew we had to come and scrap. We have not played the most beautiful rugby all the time but first and foremost it was about working hard for each other and everyone buying into it.”

South Africa 54-14 Japan

In the bronze-medal match, South Africa thumped Japan, 54-14, scoring eight tries in an exciting display, with Rosko Specman scoring a hat-trick. Juan de Jongh crossed the line after just a matter of seconds to put his South Africa ahead 7-0. The Blitzboks doubled their lead through Specman. Japan’s Yusaku Kuwazuru added a try before the half-time break. Specman added his second of the game. The Cherry Blossoms began the second period by scoring after a 70-metre dash. Cecil Afrika the scored twice and Justin Geduld put the Blitzboks ahead 47-14. Specman added a late eighth try of the match, securing a 54-14 victory and bronze medal for South Africa.

The Future of Olympic Rugby Sevens

World Rugby president Bill Beaumont believes the International Olympic Committee will decide that sevens is worthy of a permanent place on the Olympic roster from now on. Rugby returned to the Olympics after a 92-year absence, and will be a part of the 2020 Tokyo Games, the year after the World Cup is staged in Japan.

“Nobody in World Rugby is conceited enough to think that we have a divine right to be here, but I do think hopefully we have showcased our sport on a world stage,” Beaumont said. “If you think of the men’s semi-finals there were countries from Asia, Europe, Oceania and Africa. That’s not bad for a global game. Hopefully we have earned the right to be a permanent sport. We will be trying like mad to retain our status. “We have got Tokyo in four years’ time in the year after the Rugby World Cup in Japan so I can only see rugby expanding in both forms of the game in XVs and sevens. Hopefully it will be a catalyst in South American and when we got to Tokyo it will enable to us to expand the game more and more in Asia.”
