England Rugby News

Saracens are the current England and European double champions with the help of Maro Itoje who will feature in the upcoming Autumn Internationals against South Africa, Australia, Fiji, and Argentina beginning in September.
Currently Saracens are in pre-season training getting ready to defend their title and repeat their performance of last season.
Saracens hooker Jamie George was asked the secrets of the rugby teams’ success.
“You don’t get anywhere without hard work,” replied George. “We know that so we are constantly doing live scrums, live mauls because we believe that’s what makes us good. It always gets a bit tasty in the forwards sessions while the backs do a bit of passing outside!”
Saracens pre-season performance director Phil Morrow talked with the media about the club’s pride about their training program and getting his side in good condition for the upcoming season.
“We pride ourselves at the club that we don’t do anything gimmicky in terms of the training,” said Morrow. “I think a lot of pre-seasons become ego-driven by those taking them. You want to make it hard because it should be. I can’t remember who said it but they said: ‘Any fool can make someone tired.’ We are not just here to make them tired, we are here to get them in good condition for the season and to do their jobs.
"It is not about thrashing someone for the sake of thrashing someone. Anyone can do that,” added Morrow. ‘It is about finding out what can make someone better at rugby and then tailoring their pre-season accordingly. The Tuesday and Friday afternoons are tough. Unless you are tremendously out of shape you will get your Wednesdays and weekends free.”
The “beefed-up” Vunipola brothers, who returned to Tonga in their summer break, are back in Saracens’ pre-season Rhinos training.
“We call it the Rhinos, it’s a lot nicer than fat club,” laughed Morrow. “They might do a little bit less speed and so, say, a strongman circuit because that is going to help them get control of their body fat make up. Generally the Rhinos are the big people. If you play in the front row or generally are an Islander then you are in the Rhinos. I don’t think they mind it. A lot of their job description is grunt work, it’s pushing the scrum, it’s mauling, it’s hitting breakdowns, it’s getting up, making tackles It helps prepare them for what they do. They are not being flogged for the sake of being flogged. They are doing it because it is important for them to be good at rugby. They want to be good at their jobs.”

About Marco Itoje
England and Saracens twenty-one year old rugby union star Maro Itoje is already one of England's most influential players. Itoje was named man of the match many times last season. Itoje has recently been included in the Top 50 most influential people in rugby according to the Rugby World magazine.
Itoje started in 26 matches for England and Saracens in 2015-2016, winning every match. Saracens won the domestic and European double, England won the Grand Slam and recently beat titan rugby team Australia 3-0 in their own back yard on summer tour.
“Last season went fairly well,” said a modest Maro Itoje.
Itoje made his full England debut in last season’s Six Nations as a substitute for an injured Joe Launchbury. He came off the bench against Italy and started against Ireland seeming to transform England with his dynamic style. Opponents fear his poaching ability.
“There is far more to come from both Saracens and England, this is just the beginning. The most exciting thing is I don't think either Saracens or England are anywhere near their potential.”
“Someone tweeted me that which is quite cool but it doesn’t change things or my outlook on life,” added Itoje. “I don't know the formula used. On a day-to-day basis my life hasn’t changed at all. I still see the same people each day and work with the same people. I think I am very fortunate to be surrounded by a lot of good people, both here and at the club, and my family play a big role, my dad and mum are always advising me.
"They treat me the same way as always, and I find that quite refreshing. It keeps things in reality and keeps things in perspective. I want to keep things as normal,” continued Itoje. “If anybody gets carried away at both Saracens and England the environment stops that from happening. I don’t think they have but, if it were to happen, the culture would stop it.”
“The most exciting thing is I don't think any of those two squads are anywhere near their potential,” said Itoje. “I think both teams have a lot more to give and show. If we continue to work hard, stay humble and have that hunger we will get better.”
“There are a lot of things I need to work on, trust me,” added Itoje. “But those kind of things are between me and the coach and I’d like to keep it that way. Obviously I’m nowhere near the finished article. I’m definitely not at my peak. I’m 21 and there are loads of things the coaches have highlighted to me, which I need to improve. The challenge for me now is to go back to my club for the rest of pre-season and work on those skills and areas I need to improve. Hopefully we’ll see an improvement after the first couple of games.”
“I’m very happy to play wherever the coach feels I can best benefit the team. Whether that’s blindside or second row, I don’t mind. I feel as if I can play both positions to suitable levels.”
