England 27-14 Argentina

Twickenham Stadium, London
Referee: Pascal Gauzere (FFR)
Attendance: 81,586

The England National Rugby Team soundly defeated Argentina 27-14 at Twickenham on Saturday, despite playing 75 minutes with only 14 men after winger Elliot Daly was sent off for making a dangerous tackle. England earned a 16-0 lead through three penalty kicks from popular Owen Farrell plus a converted penalty try. Argentina finally got on the scoreboard when they scored two tries on both sides of half-time to bring them to 14 points, within two points of equalizing with England. Two more penalty kicks from Owen Farrell plus a Jonny May try saw England increase their lead over Argentina and record their 12th victory under new England manager Eddie Jones.

England had at least a one-man disadvantage from the fifth-minute following Daly’s dismissal and were down to 13 men when Argentina scored their two tries against an England side that only a year ago were wallowing in World Cup shame from their early exit from the tournament. Daly, a central figure in England’s attacking game, being sent off required a modified game plan, and England managed to score 16 points looking in total control until No 8 Billy Vunipola left the game with a major knee injury just before the interval. Chris Robshaw inspired his side although the Captain’s armband has passed to Dylan Hartley.

A fatigued Argentina side faded showing signs of weariness could not muster up the energy to catch up to a fitter and hungrier England. No doubt they will focus on improving for the 2019 World Cup. Dan Cole’s yellow card at the end of the first-half, following a series of scrum penalties awarded against England under their posts gave fleeting hope to the Pumas of victory over England that quickly faded. Owen Farrell was given four kicks at goal in each half through Argentina’s lack of discipline. He scored on his first three to give England a crucial cushion. Before the match, the Pumas were billed by Eddie Jones as the second best team in the Rugby Championship after New Zealand. England’s desire to win gave them the energy to earn their third win to date in the Autumn Internationals. Eddie Jones’s team ended the match with 14 men when their replacement prop Enrique Pieretto reacted to a bad tackle by Joe Marler by stamping on the loose-head’s chest. Pieretto was sent off and a reckless Marler went into the sin-bin.

Squads

England made some changes from after their win against Fiji. Two players who scored two tries in that game were missing. Semesa Rokoduguni is out, with Jonny May returning. Joe Launchbury has been banned for the last two games of the internationals. George Kruis has returned along with Mike Brown at full-back and Tom Wood. Argentina have won only two of their last 11 matches and they lost to the Scots last week. England earned a 13th straight win, and their 12th under Eddie Jones. England have not lost since they played Australia in the 2015 England World Cup, 13 matches ago. Their unbeaten 2016 rugby season ends against the Wallabies on Saturday.
