RBS 6 Nations highlights: England

Rugby Six Nations England highlights

England were crowned 2017 Six Nations Champions again, but the Red Rose lost the opportunity for a second successive Grand Slam with their defeat to Ireland in their last match of the tournament. England won matches against France, Wales, Italy and Scotland, before losing to Ireland in Dublin. For the second straight season, Eddie Jones’ England side were crowned RBS 6 Nations champions, and manager Eddie Jones suffered his first defeat in charge as his side missed out on back-to-back Grand Slams. "The great thing for us is that we have won back-to-back RBS 6 Nations but no-one has ever won three in a row," said England boss Eddie Jones. The upcoming June internationals will give Jones’s side the chance to continue their winning spell as England head to Argentina for a two-Test series against the Pumas. In a British & Irish Lions year, the Australian boss Jones will likely be missing some players, and like his predecessor Stuart Lancaster, Jones will use the tour to Argentina to recruit new talent for his England team.

In 2013 Lancaster gave debuts and first caps to 8 rugby players against the Pumas, including Jonny May and Billy Vunipola, both of whom featured on this year's RBS 6 Nations-winning team. Jones is very aware of the challenges brought on by the games in San Juan and Santa Fe. "We could be missing half our squad for Argentina. It is going to be interesting for us playing Argentina in Argentina at full strength," Jones said. "One game is in the middle of the Andes - I didn't know they could put a soccer stadium in the middle of the Andes that is going to be quite a challenge for us."

Jones will be without coach Steve Borthwick, who will be on tour with the Lions. Jones will have Borthwick back for the Autumn Internationals in November when England kicks things off against the Pumas once again, this time at Twickenham. England will next go head to head in games against Australia and then Samoa, as they look to extend their home record under Jones which has so far seen them win nine from nine at Twickenham. Jones has also set his sights on a third win in the 2018 RBS 6 Nations. "The great thing for us is that we have won back-to-back RBS 6 Nations but no-one has ever won three in a row," added Jones. "So we are still in a position where we could create a record in the RBS 6 Nations. It defines something no-one has ever done. Next year is going to be even tougher than this was, and it was tough for us."

Match Highlights

Ireland finished the Six Nations with a flourish against champions England as Iain Henderson scored the only try of the game and Ireland capped their RBS 6 Nations campaign in style with a 13-9 victory in Dublin. The result also secures a second-place finish for Ireland on a dramatic final day of the Championship. England won 11 straight games in the RBS 6 Nations coming into this game and were looking to become the first team to win back-to-back Grand Slams. But Ireland were itching to make up for losing to Wales in Cardiff while also chasing second place in the tournament. In the end Henderson's try and Jonathan Sexton proved the difference. Ireland was dealt a blow before kick-off when Jamie Heaslip was ruled out with a late injury, and his place in the team was taken by Peter O'Mahony, with CJ Stander shifting to No.8 and Dan Leavy coming onto the bench. O'Mahony was amazing in his first start of the campaign, winning the man-of-the-match award to boot. Ireland were without Conor Murray, who had not recovered from the knock he took against Wales. Kieran Marmion took his place and provided an impressive performance. Ireland got off to a strong start with a Sexton penalty after 11 minutes giving them the lead, but England hit back through Owen Farrell. Ireland lost their captain Rory Best to an early injury, but he made his return as they started to dominate the game. Ireland was rewarded on 24 minutes when Henderson went over.

England held on with a strong defense in the beginning, but eventually Ireland found a way. Ireland was ahead 10-3 at the break. Eddie Jones brought on Mako Vunipola for Joe Marler at half-time, and soon cut the deficit to four points. Ireland were penalized for coming in at the side, Farrell again on target from 45 metres. And the English maul appeared to be making inroads, with a couple of penalties in quick succession allowing them to work from their own 22 into Irish territory. England were caught infringing at the breakdown and Sexton added the resulting penalty to bring Ireland’s lead back to seven points. Back came England again, with their maul once again doing damage and earning another penalty which Farrell slotted to make it 13-9 at the whistle.
