Rugby League World Cup: Papua New Guinea 4-38 Samoa

Samoa ran in seven tries to thrash Papua New Guinea and all but secure a place in the Rugby League World Cup quarter-finals.

They took an early lead when Larsen Marabe knocked on for New Guinea, allowing Suaia Matagi to go over for the opening try of the match after just two minutes.

Antonio Winterstein went over in the corner seven minutes later, while Pita Godinet ran in Samoa's third try after just 15 minutes, capping off a slick move from the Pacific Islanders.

Winterstein got his second of the match 10 minutes later, while Ben Roberts completed a dominant first half for Samoa when he ran in unchallenged from 50 metres after collecting Jason Chan's kick.

Papua New Guinea at least saw Nandye go over in the second half as Samoa's intensity dropped, but hey still had enough for Sue to cross and Winterstein to get his third.

Samoa face France in their final pool game and will be increasingly confident after a seven-try display which included an Antonio Winterstein hat-trick.

If they can beat the French, second place and an easier quarter-final -likely to be against Fiji- awaits.
