Meet the England rugby player: Maro Itoje

Maro Itoje, birthname Oghenemaro Miles Itoje is born in Camden North London to Nigerian parents. At the age of eleven, he got introduced to rugby at St George’s school in Harpenden. Maro Itoje has always been a very sportsminded guy. As a junior he played many sports including basketball, football, rugby and athletics. He even represented England at U17 level in short put.

Not just a regular sports player

There is a big misconception about professional athletes. They are widely considered as not the smartest bunch around. Early in their lives they often put all their focus on being the best sporter they can be. This usually hurts their education. Not so much for Maro Itoje. He studied for a politics degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies in Bloomsbury, London at the same time as starting his rugby career.

Rugby career

Maro Itoje is a Saracens academy product. He captained England U20 to victory at the Junior World Championship final in 2014. Two years later he joined the England Six Nations team in 2016 as a new member. In the meantime, he worked his way up to a regular in the England rugby team. Maro made three Test appearances for the British & Irish Lions against New Zealand in 2017 and was part of the squad that reached the 2019 Rugby World Cup final.
