Japan at the 2026 Nations Championship
In a major positive step for their development, Japan were invited to participate in the inaugural edition of the new-fangled Nations Championship, a tournament launched for the first time in 2026 to inject fresh impetus into the summer and autumn test internationals.
Japan form part of the six-team contingent from the Southern Hemisphere Pool alongside Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Fiji, though the Cherry Blossoms won’t play any of their regional rivals in the new tournament.
Instead, they played three opponents from the Northern Hemisphere in the Southern Hemisphere Series in July, winning once against Italy (27-10) before slipping to defeats against Ireland (20-36) and France (15-42).
With four points bagged, Japan must hold fire now until the 2026 Nations Championship resumes in November with the onset of the Northern Hemisphere Series, when the Asian outfit travel to Europe for a trio of tough tests.

Description: The Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium is located in the northwest of Japan’s capital city of Tokyo. It was built in 1947 and has undergone numerous facelifts since. It primarily operates as a rugby venue, though it has also hosted association football matches on occasion.
The Japan National Stadium (Tokyo), built on the footprint of an older venue, was opened for the first time in 2019 and is a state-of-the-art facility that has been hosting sporting events and concerts since opening its doors.
