Liverpool edges Leicester to move within reach of title

Liverpool took another crucial step toward the Premier League crown on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Leicester City. While the title celebrations were postponed due to Arsenal's win earlier in the day, Arne Slot’s side remains firmly in control and could clinch the title as early as next week. The defeat also marked the end of Leicester City’s hopes of survival. Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team now faces relegation, just a season after returning to the top flight.

Title hopes delayed, but not denied

Liverpool entered the match knowing that a win, combined with an Arsenal loss at Ipswich Town, would secure them the title. However, Arsenal managed to grab all three points, temporarily postponing Liverpool’s potential coronation. Still, the pressure was on Slot’s men to deliver a result and keep the title within reach. Starting with Dutch internationals Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool found themselves in a tense and physical battle at the King Power Stadium. Leicester, fighting to avoid relegation, showed resilience and determination, making life difficult for the league leaders.

Late drama breaks the deadlock

Leicester City held strong for much of the match, threatening to earn a valuable point. But in the dying minutes, Liverpool found their breakthrough. A cleared corner kick fell perfectly for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who fired a powerful shot into the net. Leicester appealed for a foul in the buildup to the goal, but referee Michael Oliver waved off the protests. The goal stood, and Liverpool held on for the narrow 1-0 win.

Leicester relegated, Liverpool on the brink

The result sealed Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League. Despite a spirited performance, Van Nistelrooij’s side couldn’t get the result they needed to keep their survival hopes alive. For Liverpool, the title is now within touching distance. The Reds can be crowned champions next Sunday at Anfield with a win over Tottenham Hotspur. Alternatively, if Arsenal loses at home to Crystal Palace on Wednesday, the title race could end even sooner. With just a few matches left to play, Arne Slot’s debut season at Anfield could soon be rewarded with Premier League glory and Liverpool’s first league title since 2020.
