Birmingham City and Wrexham join the Championship
When in the Championship, your so close to the Premier League. But getting in their it a really hard task. The League One is a very hard competition to get out of. With 24 teams you need to play 46 league games. With 1 more complete round to play and some single matches, the race for promotion to the Championship has been finalized. In this article we look into the two teams that join the 2025-2026 Championship season. On top of that we will also have a look at the teams that are heading towards the League One play-offs.
Birmingham City bounced back
After getting related from the Championship at the end of last season, Birmingham City quickly bounced back. From early on in this season they showed they were by far the best team in the league. Even though they have 2 spare matches on the rest of the league, they are already crowned League One champions a few weeks ago. With 102 points from 43 matches, the Blues had an amazing season. Now its up to them to show they are a worthy Championship team.
Wrexham’s fairytale continues
The race for the second promotion spot was a lot heavier. During the entire season teams swapped places. After today’s 3pm matches 4 teams were still in contention to get their hands on the second place. Before the last match of today the table looked like this:
- 2. Wrexham 86 points
- 3. Stockport 84 points
- 4. Wycombe Wanderers 84 points
- 5. Charlton Athletic 82 points
With Wrexham playing at home against Charlton Atheltic anyway was still possible. A win by the away team would’ve got all four of them within 2 points. Unfortunately for the rest of the teams, Wrexham was too strong and beat Charlton Athletic with 3-0. This means their fairytale continues. The club is breaking records at the moment. For the first time in the history of English football, a club got all the way from the National League to the Championship after three consecutive promotions. The dream continues for the Welsh side as they start preparing to face the likes of Leicester City, Southampton and many other big English clubs in the Premier League.
League One play-off
The three remaining teams all secured League One play off football. The fourth team is still a big question mark. Leyton Orient is currently in 6th place, with Reading in 7th. Both teams are on 75 points, but Leyton Orient’s goal difference is much better. The 6th placed team finishes the season away at Huddersfield Town, if they slip up, Reading needs to beat 12th placed Barnsley.
