Man United and Spurs take steps toward Europa League final

The Europa League semi-finals kicked off with two decisive results, as both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur put themselves in pole position for a place in the final on May 21 at San Mamés, Bilbao. Both English clubs, struggling domestically in the Premier League, now have the chance to save their seasons with European glory.

United dominate in Bilbao

Manchester United, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, delivered a commanding 0-3 away win over Athletic Bilbao, the fourth-placed team in La Liga. The night started with the hosts looking promising, creating the better chances in the opening half-hour, but United struck ruthlessly before halftime. Casemiro opened the scoring with a powerful header, and things went from bad to worse for Bilbao when defender Dani Vivian was sent off for a foul on Rasmus Højlund, leading to a penalty. Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot and added a second goal before the break, putting United firmly in control. In the second half, United comfortably held their lead, with Noussair Mazraoui expertly shutting down Bilbao’s star winger Nico Williams. Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt even made his long-awaited return after injury, coming off the bench in the 65th minute. Now, Bilbao will need a miracle in the second leg at Old Trafford if they want to make it back to their home stadium for the final.

Spurs build strong lead over Bodø/Glimt

Tottenham Hotspur, enduring a miserable 16th-place domestic season, gave their fans a reason to hope with a 3-1 win over Norwegian underdogs Bodø/Glimt in London. Spurs were without injured captain Son Heung-min, but Brennan Johnson put them ahead inside the first minute with a clinical header. James Maddison doubled the lead after half an hour, and Dominic Solanke made it 3-0 from the penalty spot midway through the second half. Bodø/Glimt pulled one back late through Ulrik Saltnes, whose shot deflected slightly off Dutch defender Micky van de Ven. Spurs will travel to Norway next week with a two-goal cushion, aiming to secure their first European final since 2019.

All eyes on May 21

If both English sides complete the job next week, the Europa League final will feature a heavyweight clash between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur — two clubs desperate to end tough domestic campaigns with European silverware. The stakes are massive: winning the Europa League not only brings a major trophy but also guarantees a coveted Champions League spot next season. For both United and Spurs, lifting the trophy in Bilbao could transform their seasons from disappointment to triumph.
