Scotland targets World Cup and Six Nations victories

Scottish Rugby has outlined a four-year strategic plan, which includes securing a Six Nations Grand Slam and winning the World Cup.

Former Scotland back Chris Paterson thinks that his country can achieve World Cup success in the near future.

Scottish Rugby Union chief executive Mark Dodson has targeted a Six Nations win and World Cup triumph by 2016, as well as making Glasgow and Edinburgh two of Europe's elite clubs.

While he admits that this is ambitious, Paterson does believe that the four-year plan is possible to accomplish

The plan was unveiled by the SRU as Dodson addressed Saturday's AGM for the first time.

Scotland lost every game of this year's Six Nations but turned the tables with a 100% record in their summer tour with victories over Australia, Samoa and Fiji.

Dodson said: "The goals we've set reflect our ambition for the game in Scotland."

"With unity, and support from the whole nation, there is no reason we can't achieve those goals. We are making real progress in revitalising the game of rugby in Scotland."

Edinburgh reached the Heineken Cup semi-finals while Glasgow made the RaboDirect Pro12 play-offs and Dodson believes the performances of the two clubs are key to the Scottish game's future.

Scotland's best World Cup showing was fourth place in 1991 and their last Grand Slam came in the previous year, when they won the Five Nations competition.
