Rugby League World Cup

England were left shell-shocked and heartbroken after seeing victory slip from their grasp in an epic Rugby League World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at Wembley.

England had put themselves in a winning position with 13 minutes to play, and set about a stern defensive effort, only to see their resolve broken in the cruellest of fashions at the death.

After James Graham was pegged for a high tackle on Sonny Bill Williams, Johnson darted past Kevin Sinfield and raced over the line, and then dusted himself off to add the conversion that won the match.

Coach Steve McNamara insisted none of his players had anything to reproach themselves.

"I don't think he (Sinfield) has got anything to blame himself for, he worked his socks off. It would be very cruel to blame anyone for anything after that result," he said.

"I'm not sure what the answer is. You have to move on, there are worse things in life. We are all feeling as though we are as low as we can be, but in reality it's not.

"Worse things happen and we should be privileged we've been part of such a brilliant game. I'm sure we will soon get a reality check and realise we have to move on."

Australia 64-0 Fiji

Australia set up a World Cup final re-match against New Zealand with a comprehensive 64-0 victory over Fiji at Wembley.

The Kangaroos have barely been troubled throughout a pursuit of a trophy they consider their own and this game proved to be no different as they ran in 11 tries.

Jarryd Hayne scored a hat-trick, while Darius Boyd (2), Cooper Cronk, James Tamou, Josh Papalii, Brett Morris and Andrew Fifita all went over the whitewash.

Yet another one-sided victory ensured that the final at Old Trafford will be a repeat of the 2008 edition, when the Kiwis toppled their Antipodean neighbours in the showpiece.
