2015 Rugby World Cup News: New Zealand’s All Blacks

The All Blacks are New Zealand’s national rugby union team who made their first tour of England 110 years ago in a match against Swansea. A slightly frayed rugby shirt dating back to that tour in 1905 recently sold at auction for a record £20,000 to an English rugby fan. In December 1905, the New Zealand national rugby side left Wellington Harbor in New Zealand on a ferry bound for Britain. The New Zealand team played in Britain, Ireland, France, and the United States on their first tour outside of Australia.

The rugby side ran, passed, and scrimmaged for 42 days practicing on deck before arriving at Plymouth Sound. The New Zealand national rugby team started the campaign as “The Colonials”, but later became known as the “All Blacks” due to their black shirts, shorts, and socks. The 1905 team is now remembered as “The Originals” for starting the All Blacks legend.

The traveling rugby team from far-away New Zealand were not expected to excel at rugby or to be serious competition, however they defeated Devonshire 55-4 in their first match. The All Blacks then proceded to score 353 points in their next 10 battles. The All Blacks only defeat on the tour was a 3-0 loss to Wales.

On their tour of Britain, The All Blacks scored a total of 976 points and conceded only 59 points on their way to becoming the most famous rugby team in the world.

It is tradition for the All Blacks to perform a Haka challenge to their opponents prior to the start of every game.

New Zealand’s All Blacks are the most successful international team in rugby history. In 1914 The All Blacks ranked as the top ranked side for over five years straight. The All Blacks have also claimed the World Rugby Team of the Year eight times in the last ten years.
