England hires new manager Eddie Jones

Eddie Jones to take England helm at Murrayfield: Scotland v England

The England National Rugby Team has a new boss, Eddie Jones, who replaced former England boss Stuart Lancaster after host nation England’s embarrassing early exit from the Rugby World Cup 2015 recently held in the United Kingdom.

As he begins his reign, England’s first foreign manager Jones is on a steep learning curve with many crucial decisions to make quickly by the seat of his pants. One big decision Jones is facing is the choice of his new captain.

Possibly with the next Rugby World Cup 2019 in mind, Jones needs to make the right appointment of captaincy of his new side. In any case, the choice of a new captain to replace Chris Robshaw will be important in Jones’ early tenure and the formative strategy he will put in place as he changes his team.

Jones will cultivate a leader for the Lions from his choice taken from current Premiership captains, since Jones has stipulated that his new team captain must currently be the first choice in his position.

Australian Jones must first decide his coaching staff, elite squad, and captain to be ready to roll by December 1 on his first official work day. He will surely continue to make decisions and changes in his first months that will be highly significant in his time in charge of the Lions. Jones will make his England debut in a Rugby Six Nations battle against Scotland on January 6, 2016.

England were only 10 minutes away from a victory against Wales and qualifying to go on to the 2015 Rugby World Cup Quarter-Finals in October. However instead of pulling up to win the match, England caved in and seemed to collapse under pressure as they had done before in previous tournaments.

Jones will have to prove early on that he knows how to keep the pressure off his side in order to silence his critics. Jones has been signed on a four-year contract agreeing to get England to the 2019 World Cup Final game and enabling a great European campaign along the way. Jones has just a short time to prepare his side for England’s opening Rugby Six Nations opening match against Scotland in January 2016.

Fifty-five year old Jones played 12 times for provincial side New South Wales as a hooker including a match against the British and Irish Lions in 1989. Jones has had a successful coaching career, winning big trophies both domestically and internationally, and having also coached rugby in England.

In 2001, Jones led Australia to victory over the British & Irish Lions. Jones was formerly Australian Head Coach when England defeated them in the Rugby World Cup Final in 2003. He was on the South African coaching staff when the Springboks beat England in the Rugby World Cup final in 2007. In 2011 Jones took over as Head Coach for Japan defeating South Africa 34-32 in the 2015 Rugby World Cup moving Japan into the top ten of the world rankings. Following the tournament he was appointed Head Coach of the South African Super franchise, The Stormers, before agreeing terms with the RFU.

As Jones prepares for England’s upcoming Rugby Six Nations game with Scotland, he is under tremendous pressure to deliver a 23rd win in the last 25 years to begin his reign with a victory, with only three defeats to Scotland on the record in that time period.

Jones is the first non-Englishman to become Head Coach of the England rugby team. "The opportunity to take the reins in, possibly, the world’s most high profile international rugby job doesn’t come along every day however, and I feel fortunate to be given the opportunity,” said Jones after his appointment of England Head Coach. “I’m now looking forward to working with the RFU and the players to move beyond the disappointment England suffered at the World Cup and hope to build a new team that will reflect the level of talent that exists within the English game. I believe the future is bright for England.”

“We promised to recruit a coach with proven international experience and we have done that,” remarked RFU Chief Executive Ian Ritchie after Jones’ appointment. "Eddie is a world-class coach, with extensive experience at the highest level with Australia, South Africa and Japan. We believe that the appointment, which was unanimously approved by the RFU Board, is the right one to bring England success in the short, medium and long term.”
