Barbarians 31 – 49 Argentina in anniversary battle

Killik Cup: Rugby World Cup finalists from Barbarians lose to Argentina in star-studded battle at Twickenham

Fans enjoyed great rugby and there was entertainment aplenty at the popular recent Killik Cup match at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, November 21, 2015. The Barbarians were defeated by Argentina 31-49 as World Cup finalists from Australia and New Zealand joined forces and competed against titan club Argentina in a star-studded rugby event that will be long remembered by rugby supporters.

The Killik Cup match celebrated the Barbarians’ 125th anniversary in style, as they hosted a stunning birthday party at Twickenham rugby stadium before a crowd of 38,101 fans. The much anticipated battle of the Barbarians against Argentina celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Barbarians club founding by WP Carpmael in 1890. A number of the club’s former stars including legendary 1973 try scorer Gareth Edwards watched from the Royal Box.

Argentina outscored their hosts by seven tries to five on a bitterly cold afternoon. Man of the match was Argentina’s Santiago Cordero. Barbarian coach recently named World Rugby Coach of the Year, Michael Cheika led a side of superstar rugby players including New Zealand Rugby World Cup 2015 winner Nehe Milner-Skudder, Fijian winger Nemani Nadolo, and Victor Matfield - who all scored.

Cheika, whose Wallabies were recently beaten 34-17 by the All Blacks in Rugby World Cup 2015, called up five South African internationals and Fiji’s Nemani Nadolo. The starting line-up included New Zealand’s World Breakthrough Player Nehe Milner-Skudder along with giant wing Nadolo and Australia’s Tevita Kuridrani. An all South African second row of Captain Victor Matfield and Lood de Jager was selected by Cheika. Seven more internationals were among the subs, including Bakkies Botha, who make his final pro appearance.

The Pumas side contained most of the players that empowered their recent World Cup campaign including hooker Agustin Creevy, fly half Nicolas Sanchez, and star wing Santiago Cordero. Australian Cheika and his Barbarians side got off to a strong start scoring in the first minutes as Tevita Kuridrani gathered Lima Sopoaga's fantastic kick. The Pumas soon answered by scoring to demonstrate the talent that got them to the World Cup semi-finals when No8 Facundo Isa arrived to crash over. Next Santiago Cordero skilfully side-stepped his way to the touchline for a second try.

Their third try was absolutely genius, with Cordero turning defense into attack by taking the ball inside his 22, darting forward and flicking a superb pass out the back of his hand to full-back Moyano to score. The Barbarians could not maintain their opening intensity, but still had the quality to earn another try when Sopoago’s beautifully placed chip was cleanly taken by the All Blacks wing Naholo.

Argentina showed dominance and showed they clearly owned the first half as Landajo kicked into space allowing Cordero to outrun his opposite number and claim his second score making it Barbarians 12 – Argentina 28 at half-time.

The second half started with Argentina's fourth try. Next Pumas center Jerónimo de la Fuente touched down. Barbarians sub Joe Tomane broke away for an easy score, with Nadolo converting. In the final 10 minutes of the clash, Nadolo scored from the left side and converted with his right foot. Argentina star Sanchez capitalized on an error to score his sixth of the match and final conversion.

With only seconds left in the head-to-head battle, Matfield dived over in the far right corner before Botha was handed a conversion attempt. Botha’s kick fell short but the crowd cheered for him anyways at the final whistle.
