Ireland rugby news: RBS 6 Nations & Autumn Internationals

Ireland 35-25 Scotland: Ireland finish 3rd in 2016 Rugby Six Nations Championship

Scotland’s Stuart Hogg scored a superb solo effort as the Scots took a first-half lead with Richie Gray going over in the second half. Hogg lit up the Aviva Stadium with a sublime try. The exciting full-back fielded Murray’s box kick and turned on the afterburners to leave the Irish defense behind. However CJ Stander, Keith Earls, Conor Murray, and Devin Toner tries sealed the 2016 Six Nations victory for Joe Schmidt's side with a final score of Ireland 35-25 Scotland.

Ireland secured a third place finish in the 2016 RBS 6 Nations tournament at Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The hosts defeated Scotland 35-25 in a fiery fight to the finish outscoring Scotland by 4 tries to 3 in the entertaining contest to the delight of 51,700 attendees. Seeking revenge, Scotland will host Ireland on February 4, 2017 at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh in next season’s Rugby Six Nations event.

England officially won the 2016 Championship and Grand Slam after defeating France 21-31. England coach Eddie Jones claimed the Grand Slam and RBS 6 Nations silverware in his Six Nations debut just a few months after he was hired. Wales came in second in the event.

Scotland finished fourth in the 2016 Six Nations by scoring 11 tries, their biggest try tally in the history of the RBS 6 Nations tournament. Scottish full-back Stuart Hogg is reportedly the championship's most lethal attacker and one of world rugby's finest. The challenging Six Nations match was joyful for the Irish but induced consistent pain for the Scots resulting in a feisty contest and a four try-to-three victory.

Sexton put Ireland 6-0 ahead at 13 minutes. There were only brief moments of respite for Vern Cotter's Scottish side. Scotland’s Greig Laidlaw put over a penalty, but Sexton cancelled it out soon after. Joe Schmidt's Ireland side were dominant, responding to Stuart Hogg's magnificent solo try with first-half scores for CJ Stander and Keith Earls. Conor Murray scored a third early in the second half to make it 28-13, followed by Richie Gray's score that narrowed the gap to 28-16.

Devin Toner's try with 12 minutes left settled it, but Alex Dunbar still crossed for a consolation at the end. It was only the 2015 champions' second victory of the tournament after last week's nine-try win against Italy, but Ireland sealed a third-place finish after England defeated France in Saturday's final game. Ireland scored 12 points while John Barclay was in the sin-bin in the first half and another seven when Dunbar was yellow-carded in the second half.

Ireland v Scotland Six Nations Squads

Ireland was precise and accurate with great instincts and vision, despite a lot of injuries. Ireland back Robbie Henshaw, a multi-dimensional rugby player, gave a solid and rangy performance that was pacy with some great footwork. CJ Stander carried the ball more than any other player in the event, taking the ball on 79 times. Flankers Josh van der Flier and CJ Stander, and center Stuart McCloskey, stepped up their game in gear to win the match.

Scotland manager Vern Cotter's free-wheeling "ruck-and-run" style landed Scotland in the bottom-half of the 2016 Six Nations. Of note, full-back Stuart Hogg beat more defenders (17) than any other Scotland player, playing amazingly well in attack. Centre Duncan Taylor and scrum-half Greig Laidlaw provided moments of world-class rugby.

Ireland’s twenty-two-year-old Jack O'Donoghue intends to fight for a place in Ireland's fiercely-competitive back row after receiving and enjoying his first call-up for the 2016 RBS 6 Nations. O'Donoghue captained Ireland at the Under-18 and Under-20 level where he excelled. O’Donoghue was added to Ireland manager Joe Schmidt’s Ireland side. "It was kind of a shock. I didn't really see myself in the RBS 6 Nations mix but it came and I'm delighted," O'Donoghue remarked.

"When I got up there I was a bit nervous; you are thrown into the deep end,” continued O’Donoghue. "I was just sticking to what I do know and do well at Munster. I really enjoyed my experience. "You see from the week with Ireland, that is the standard I need to get to and even though I might not be there physically and size-wise, at the end of the season if I can show that I can be a dominant back-row, I can push for Ireland in the next year or so."
