Scotland finish 4th in 2016 Rugby Six Nations

Scotland played two home matches - against England and France; and three away matches - against Wales, Italy and Ireland in the 2016 Six Nations Championship. With two victories and three defeats, Scotland finished the 2016 Six Nations Championship in fourth position.

In the RBS 6 Nations 2016 tournament, Scotland began by losing 9-15 to England as Jack Nowell’s try sealed a winning start for Eddie Jones’ side at BT Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Saturday, February 6th, with an attendance of 67,144. Four months on from their disastrous 2015 World Cup campaign on England soil, The Red Rose established an early lead through George Kruis' converted try and went on to win the 2016 Six Nations Championship.

England retained the Calcutta Cup with a hard fought 9-15 victory against Scotland at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. England's new head coach Eddie Jones saw his side score a try in each half. After the loss, Scotland head coach Vern Cotter remarked, "The players are very disappointed. That game was there to be won and that's the hard, cold fact." However Eddie Jones believed all along that England would win. "I always thought we were going to win the game unless we did something silly," said England boss Eddie Jones.

Scotland’s Stuart Hogg Named RBS 6 Nations Man of the Championship

Full-back Stuart Hogg became the first Scot to win the Six Nations 2016 Man of the Championship award beating out the rest of a 12-man shortlist that included Grand Slam winners Billy Vunipola and Jack Nowell, Wales star George North and Italy Captain Sergio Parisse by a public vote that credited Hogg after a show of sterling displays during the tournament.

Hogg follows in the footsteps of legends of the game such as Brian O'Driscoll, Shane Williams and Paul O'Connell. Twenty-three-year-old Hogg was key in Scotland earning record wins over France and Italy while he also scored one of the tries of the Championship by running 55 metres against Ireland. The consistency he had over the whole tournament was great.

Looking ahead, Scotland lock Grant Gilchrist hopes to put behind him the disappointment of missing the 2016 Six Nations due to a broken arm. Gilchrist has signed a contract extension at Edinburgh. Edinburgh Coach Alan Solomons expects Gilchrist's international experience of ten starts for his country, one coming in the RBS 6 Nations, will be a significant boost to his side.

"It is fantastic news for the club that Gilco has extended his stay with us,” said Solomons. "He is a top-flight player with international experience who adds huge value both on and off the field. He is a great bloke and a very good leader who, I believe, has a major role to play in the future of the club,” added Solomons. "Personally, I thoroughly enjoy working with Gilco and am chuffed that he will be with us as we continue to develop the club."

Gilchrist made it to the Scotland World Cup squad last year but suffered a groin injury during the Thistle’s game against the United States. After Gilco had surgery on his groin, the second row suffered a broken arm in February. "I'm delighted to be staying and really excited about next season," Gilchrist said about his new contract with Edinburgh. "This is the club I have grown up with. I came through the academy here and I've now been part of the first team for over five years.

"The last couple of years have been a frustration for me but I'm looking forward to being fully fit for pre-season." However Gilchrist is unlikely to regain his fitness in time for Scotland's summer tour of Japan in June.
