Rugby Sevens will make its return to the Olympics in Rio 2016. Featuring 12 Men’s teams and 12 Women’s teams, the tournament will be one of the highlights of the exciting summer Olympic Games. Having been accepted back into the Olympics in 2009, rugby will once again be at the forefront of the games. James Rodwell is an English pro rugby sevens player. Rodwell currently plays for the England Sevens squad. He is the most capped England sevens forward of all time.

Rodwell is ready for the summer Olympics in Rio after being named in England’s 12 man squad side. Rodwell is fit after battling his way back from injury to make the Olympics. As a child, James Rodwell was inspired watching cyclist Chris Boardman at the 1992 Olympics, and dreamt of one day following in his footsteps. Rodwell instead became a star professional rugby player. With sevens now included, Rodwell turned his focus to compete in the Olympics games as a rugby player and his dreams have become reality.

Rodwell’s dreams of competing in Rio were shattered in April 2016 as he went from playing in a record 69th consecutive World Series tournament, to the low of dislocating his knee cap. "I was in a bit of a dark place for a couple of days," said Rodwell “However, having an Olympics on the horizon is a pretty good goal to get back for.” Rodwell fought his way back to fitness with the help of support staff Remi Mobed (physio), Joe Larkin (doctor) and Jenny (physio) he managed to return to action in time to win a place in the 12-man England/Great Britain team.

“I managed to get a few tournaments under my belt to get my form back,” revealed Rodwell. “Everything went right and I’m really looking forward to getting out there and doing my best for GB.” Thirty-one-year-old Rodwell was officially named to the Great Britain squad on Monday. Great Britain has pool games against Kenya, New Zealand and Japan. The tournament will begin on Tuesday August 9 with GB taking on Kenya followed by Japan.

On Wednesday Great Britain will play New Zealand and also go head-to-head in their quarter-final match on the same day should they qualify from the group. The semi-finals and final will be held on Thursday, August 11. Rodwell described how he felt about his selection for the Sevens squad as “one of the most amazing feelings I’ve ever had in my life” and stated that the Great Britain squad are determined to achieve glory and victory in Rio in the sevens tournament. Rodwell said the Olympic sevens games are an opportunity for the sport of rugby to be showcased in a big arena.

“Every team is going there to try and win and medal and we are no different,” said Rodwell. “For Rugby Sevens this is a global opportunity, there is a huge audience and it’s the first time a lot of that audience would have seen sevens rugby - I’m sure the crowd will absolutely love it. It’s so fast paced and exciting to watch and any team can win on their day which makes it a great spectator sport.”
