Wales Whitewashed on Down Under Tour – New Zealand 46-6 Wales

The Wales National Team had a disappointing time on their “down-under” tour this summer as New Zealand delivered the final blow in a series whitewash.

New Zealand defeated Wales 46-6 as All-Blacks’ Beauden Barrett stole the show in Dunedin. Barrett scored 26 of the All Blacks' points as Wales crumbled due to the counter-attacking brilliance of New Zealand who won their match in the last game of Wales’ down-under summer tour series. After being competitive in the first two Tests in Auckland and Wellington, Wales were outplayed and produced their poorest performance of the series at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Wales conceded six tries having just two Dan Biggar penalties to show for their efforts against world champions New Zealand as fly-half Beauden Barrett crossed twice to finish with a 26-point match haul and the long wait for a win over the All Blacks continues. The All Blacks have enjoyed 29 straight victories against Wales going back to their last win in 1953. Wales lost all four games on tour leaking 22 tries in total.

Wales looked good in the opening two Tests, scoring five tries, but were no real threat, even when flanker Sam Cane was in the sin-bin for repeat offending after pulling back Webb’s arm. Wales lost their one big chance just before the break as the Kiwis exposed Wales’ creaky defense. Wales were unable to capitalize on their advantage with New Zealand monopolizing possession during the ten minutes they were down to 14 men. And as soon Cane came back on, Barrett claimed his second try - a classy effort with great hands giving the fly-half the space to go around Amos to cross for a score which he converted himself.

Wales had one final golden chance to cut the deficit and boost morale, but sadly they were unable to take it. Off a Sam Warburton lineout take, they had set up a drive with Luke Charteris breaking away, and a series of forward carries took them really close, earning a penalty as Jamie Roberts burst through to within yards. It looked like the try must be on as the ball reached Hallam Amos. But the wing was unable to hold on and the chance was gone.

That saw the All Blacks turn around with an 18-6 lead and they swiftly extended that after the break. With energy levels sapped, Wales were totally on the ropes by the end of the game. Dagg rubbed salt in the wounds in the final play as the Kiwis went the length of the field.

New Zealand: Tries - B Smith, G Moala, B Barrett (2), D Coles, I Dagg; cons - B Barrett (5)

Wales Six Nations Update

England secured their first Grand Slam since 2003 in the 2016 Six Nations. Importantly, rugby is the Welsh national game and they are second only to England in Six Nations wins. The Wales’ Red Dragons have enjoyed two 'golden eras' including the 1970s side that featured all-time great Gareth Edwards. However the Wales National Team have never improved on a third place finish in their first Rugby World Cup. Wales played 18 Tests last season, losing their June series to New Zealand 3-0.

Since then there has been talk of moving the Six Nations from their February start as a solution to the crowded global rugby union calendar. However, the Six Nations will most likely to remain in its February-March slot despite suggestions it may move to April, reported Rugby Football Union chief executive Ian Ritchie.

The new World Rugby chair, Bill Beaumont, said starting the Six Nations tournament later "could be a solution" in establishing a global rugby calendar – but why do it? "Why would you want to change something that works really well?" said Beaumont. "We have a great TV deal; we have stadia that are full for every game. So I can't see there being a significant move in that."

To date, there are no international rugby union matches scheduled for after the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Committees from both hemispheres will meet in the months ahead to decide how to restructure the calendar to enable the northern and southern hemispheres to align their seasons more effectively for the highest future potential of international rugby going forward towards World Cup 2027. English and French rugby clubs are expected to be heavily involved in the decision making in continuing what is going very well, protecting the bits that are strong, giving the global rugby game a powerful platform to prosper.
