Rugby Six Nations update France

RBS 6 Nations France National Team tickets, schedule, news

France’s opening Six Nations clash is against 2016 Six Nations Grand Slam winners England. France’s hopes to make a good showing in the Six Nations were dealt a huge blow when Clermont’s center, Wesley Fofana, a key member of Les Bleus’ midfield, ruptured his Achilles tendon. Fofana will miss the entire RBS 6 Nations championship as the 29-year-old needs an operation on his left leg. England go into their opening Six Nations match against France on February 4th at Twickenham Stadium protecting a long unbeaten run. Eddie Jones, the England National Rugby Team manager, is already looking forward to the Six Nations championship. Jones’s England side has the chance to win a second consecutive Grand Slam, something that has happened only six times in the championship’s long history. England’s unbeaten run could possibly end at one of their away games against Wales or Ireland. The starting squad is restricted by injuries to key rugby players and England have several players who have not competed in a while returning from long lay-offs. Jones has no way of knowing whether those players have had enough game time to be fit and up to the pace of international rugby in time for the start of the Six Nations tournament.

Aiming to win the RBS 6 Nations, Jones has named his England’s squad for the 2017 Six Nations Championship starting with the opening fixture against Les Bleus at Twickenham Stadium on Feb 4. The England side are ravaged by injury in Mako Vunipola, his brother Billy, James Haskell, and Chris Robshaw. Dylan Hartley is out, suspended again. Back on the squad are Maro Itoje and Hask. “A few have gone out and a few have come in so it’s a bit of a rotating door. Maro Itoje has done well for his club as has Jack Nowell,” said Jones about his squad selections. “James Haskell had a magnificent 35 seconds for Wasps in his return so hopefully he will get a bit of game time at the weekend. He was magnificent for England last year and is a fierce player. Anthony Watson has been a great player for England and is one of the most prolific try scorers for the number of Tests he has played so we are looking forward to those guys coming in and challenging for a spot.”

Australian Jones admits that he is concerned about the depth of leadership in his England Six Nations squad behind Dylan Hartley. Leicester flanker Mike Williams, Saracens utility back Alex Lozowski, and Bath prop Nathan Catt are the three uncapped players named by Jones for his 34-man side. Catt is one of four loosehead props, including 21-year-old Ellis Genge named. Joe Marler is recovering from a fractured leg. Jones rates Marler’s chances of being involved in the opening match against France on February 4 as close to 50-50. Openside James Haskell, lock Maro Itoje, winger Anthony Watson, back row Jack Clifford and winger Jack Nowell were all named for the Six Nations champions after missing the Autumn International series. Eddie Jones has named Mike Williams and Alex Lozowski in his first England Six Nations squad for the 2017 Championship. Jones declined to confirm that Northampton hooker Hartley will retain the England captaincy for the Six Nations Championship. Hartley has not played since December 9 when he was suspended for six weeks for striking Sean O’Brien, the Leinster and Ireland flanker.

“He’s moving in the right direction, he’s progressed from probably in the autumn when we would have given him a 5/10, in terms of being ready to play, to a 7/10,” Jones said. “So given that he has a good couple of days training in Portugal I anticipate him being in the reckoning for the first Test team.” Hartley will probably continue on as England captain. Owen Farrell, Mike Brown and Billy Vunipola have previously performed the role of vice-captains, but Vunipola is injured. Farrell and Brown have not captained their clubs on a regular basis. Jones was asked how many potential captains he has at his disposal, “There's not many,” said Jones. “I don't have to consider that at the moment.” After completing a perfect first year as England manager, Jones intends to create leaders in 2017.

“100 per cent, that's one of our great keys going forward,” Jones said. “Apart from working on the fundamental skills and increasing the depth of the squad, one thing we need to do is increase the leadership density of the team. That's a big project going forward. It's about developing players' leadership skills. What is being a leader? Being a leader means every day you rock up to training, rock up to a meeting, and you get on with the job. You do it to absolutely 100 per cent. And if the guy next to you is not doing it properly, you tell him he's not doing it properly. And you tell him how to do it. When we've got 10 players like that, then we'll be in a position to win the World Cup. We're not there at the moment, but we'll get there.” The England squad will fly to Portugal for a three-day warm-weather training camp on Sunday.
