The British and Irish Lions squad jetted to New Zealand ready to kick off their massive upcoming tour as their manager Warren Gatland faces the challenging task of playing in 10 matches in only 35 days without key players including injured Billy Vunipola and Ben Youngs. Gatland, his staff, and 41 players boarded flight QF10 out of Heathrow carrying the hopes of four nations, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, well aware that they face a daunting task and brutal battle against the three-time Rugby World Cup champions, the New Zealand All Blacks.

Nevertheless, the tough Lions side believes victory is possible if they can handle the immense mental and physical pressures that lie ahead as they go head-to-head with the All Blacks already two men down from Gatland’s original choices. Billy Vunipola, considered the best rugby player in the world right now is injured. Ben Youngs is unavailable and stayed home to be with his terminally ill sister-in-law. Courtney Laws and James Haskell will have a fierce battle to keep rugby giants New Zealand at bay. The popular British & Irish Lions side face 10 tough games in 35 days with 2 full days on the ground after the Lions arrive in New Zealand jet-lagged from the 26 hour trip with little time to prepare for Saturday’s series opener against New Zealand’s Provincial Barbarians. Gatland’s squad flew via Dubai and Melbourne before finally landing in New Zealand capital Auckland. In the past, England beat the Barbarians at Twickenham to win Old Mutual Wealth Cup with Eddie Jones in charge. England and Ireland fans will be celebrating after seeing the Lions starting XV, but few Scots were named to the squad.

Squad News

Jack Nowell was called-up and is probably still celebrating from Exeter’s first Premiership title on Saturday. The 24-year-old England ace will be joined up at the front by Liam Williams who won the Pro12 title with the Scarlets. Owen Farrell is considered the undisputed King of Europe after delivering back-to-back Champions Cups for Saracens. Tadhg Furlong, Mako Vunipola, Maro Itoje, and Captain Sam Warburton are on the squad. George North has remembered for his iconic hit on Israel Folau four years ago. Irish fly-half Johnny Sexton and Elliot Daly were on the plane along with Conor Murray, Toby Falateu, Courtney Lawes, and Scotland’s Stuart Hogg who was the star of the Six Nations tournament for the second year in a row. Hogg was the star of the Six Nations for the second year running and a favorite to wear No.15. Late replacement for Billy Vunipola, James Haskell made the historic tour.

British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland will face his fly-half son Bryn in first New Zealand game on June 3 after being confirmed in the Provincial Barbarians squad for the Lions’ first match in New Zealand a week from Saturday.  Gatland Sr. will have to put family loyalty aside. Bryn Gatland has joked about coming up against his old man. "Me and dad had a joke about it if it worked out like that,” said Bryn. "If things went the best way they could for me then that could be a possibility. I asked him, 'Are you going to target me? and he said, 'Absolutely'. I said, 'Well don't worry, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve', so we had a bit of a joke about it."

Provincial Barbarians coach Clayton McMillan is ready for their opening clash with the Lions. “Our coaching group is confident we have selected a strong group of players who will relish this opportunity to take on the British & Irish Lions,” said McMillan. “We have put in a lot of planning to get to this point and are looking forward to spending time as a group and see it all come together. This is a huge occasion for our players and management and I know everyone is eager to get things underway and create history.”
