Wales vs Ireland, Six Nations 2027: match preview and head-to-head
This will be Wales’s long-awaited first home assignment of the 2027 Six Nations Championship, and follows their trips to play France on 6 February and trek to take on Scotland on 13 February.
With England set to visit Cardiff after this, Wales will be eager to deliver what would be a statement, confidence-building win over the Irish, though it remains to be seen of Steve Handy’s troops have the mettle to deliver.
Andy Farrell’s Ireland are world-class operators and capable of going toe-to-toe with the planet’s best teams. Unfortunately for Wales, they don’t fall into that elite-level category and last year they were beaten comfortably by Ireland in Dublin (27-17).
That triumph earned Ireland the Triple Crown and was their fifth successive win over Wales and their ninth victory in the last ten editions of this fixture overall.
The visitors crossed the Irish Sea to win on each of their last two visits to Cardiff too, scoring 67 points combined, however, while recent history leaves Irish eyes smiling, Wales still hold the better overall historical record with 70 wins to Ireland’s 60 since 1882.
Ireland might prove too strong for Wales again, however, anyone lucky enough to be in the stands will be there to soak up one of the best atmospheres the Six Nations has to offer.

Principality Stadium guide
The Principality Stadium (or Millennium Stadium) is on Westgate Street, right in the middle of Cardiff, which means if you’re staying around the city, you can walk to the ground handily enough.
Capacity is 73,931 and it has a fully retractable roof, which is likely to be closed for a Six Nations fixture in February to protect you, the players and pitch from the taxing Welsh weather. When the roof is closed, the noise inside cranks up several notches.
If you’re heading to the match, travel light as you won’t be allowed to bring bags bigger than 35cm by 40cm inside and there are no bag-drop services. Like with other grounds, most of the vendors and services inside are card only.
An early kick-off on February 20 means the pubs and bars on St Mary Street will be packed from late morning onwards. Get into town before noon if you want a table. Otherwise squeeze in and enjoy yourself regardless.
How to get to Principality Stadium for Wales vs Ireland
On foot
If you’re in Cardiff city centre, we recommend walking to the stadium. Take the route from the castle end, down along Westgate Street. That’s how most supporters get to the ground and you can get back to the pubs afterwards the same way.
Train
If you’re on rail, head towards Cardiff Central station. The stadium is only about ten minutes from the main exit, though allow extra time to get through crowded streets on matchday. Trains run from London Paddington, Bristol, Swansea and the Valleys. The game should finish at around 16:00, so you should have plenty of time and opportunity to get on your return trains.
Bus and park & ride
Numerous city centre roads, including Westgate Street, are closed on matchdays, and there is no general parking for fans at the stadium. If you are driving, use the park-and-ride services instead. The M4 will be jammed on the day, so if you’re coming over on the ferry from Ireland, take note and plan ahead.
